Alem is a Crimean Tatar-American interdisciplinary artist and documentary filmmaker whose work explores displacement, memory, and resistance. Formerly a journalist and co-founder of The Kyiv Independent, Alem creates poetic nonfiction films that foreground cultural ritual and personal narrative amid political upheaval.
Their artistic practice extends beyond film to include documentary performance, experimental animation, photography, sound art, and politically engaged protest art.
Rooted in their Crimean Tatar heritage and shaped by time spent in Ukraine, Alem’s work often examines themes of exile, identity, and resilience across multiple media.
Alem holds an MFA in Documentary Film and Video from Stanford University and a BA in International Relations from Boston University.
